We can be a role model for small cities everywhere by using our human and natural resources wisely.
All cities trying to adapt to the challenges of the future should have a plan to address the following five areas:
- Water (source, supply, cleanliness)
- Waste (how to reduce our municipal waste to zero)
- Housing (how to ensure it is available and affordable)
- Food (universal access to healthy food)
- Transportation (access for buses, bicycles, pedestrians, emergencies, and passenger cars)
I have a very strong background in developing solutions to these problems in a variety of situations, including New Orleans post-Katrina and San Francisco after the dot-com bust. While these problems can often seem insurmountable, it is absolutely possible for a community’s leadership to tackle solutions in a thoughtful, careful way and see great results. I’ve seen it happen in the unlikeliest of places.
Longview, on the other hand, is a fantastic place with plenty of great people and access to natural resources. We should value what we have and use it wisely.
